A former Gold Coast teacher who is facing grooming charges has had changes to her bail made while she resides in a different state.

Hayley Maree Cassell, 34, is currently before the courts with one grooming charge, one charge of maintaining an unlawful relationship with a child, and a number of indecent treatment of a child under 16 years old charges.

But Cassell was not required to appear at the Southport District Court on Thursday to change her bail conditions.

The court heard she would be able to sign her bail by tomorrow afternoon at the Coffs Harbour courthouse – the closest court to her new home in New South Wales.

Her previous bail conditions had her reporting at her local NSW police station but Cassell’s defence lawyer, Thomas McKee from Butler McDermott Lawyers, said the station was often unattended when she attended to report.

Mr McKee told the court there were times Cassell attended the police station multiple times in a day only for the station to not be attended.

He said she would also telephone Coffs Harbour police station but her calls go unanswered.

Mr McKee said the difficulties reporting were compounded by the fact his client works full time.

Cassell’s line of work was not heard in court.

The court heard Cassell has complied with her reporting conditions now for more than two years.

Mr McKee applied for Cassell’s requirement to report to police be removed from her bail conditions.

The application was not opposed by the Department of Public Prosecutions.

Judge Deborah Holliday KC said she was satisfied in all the circumstances that the variation should be granted.

Cassell no longer has to report to police.

This isn’t the first time Cassell has had her bail conditions changed.

The court heard her reporting station and residence listed in her bail changed in June 2024.

Cassell has also surrendered her passport as part of her bail conditions.

The matter will next appear mention on June 26.
