Women, man dead after sedan crashes into truck carrying boat at Arundel

Three people have died after a car veered onto the wrong side of the road, smashed into a light post and collided with a truck on the Gold Coast.

THREE people in the same car have died after crossing into oncoming traffic, striking a light pole – which fell onto another car – and colliding with a truck on a busy Gold Coast road.

Two women from Pimpama, aged 47 and 48, died at the scene. The sedan driver, a 50-year-old man also from Pimpama, died shortly after arriving at Gold Coast University Hospital.

A third passenger, a 49-year-old Ashmore man, was rushed to hospital in a serious but stable condition. The relationship of the deceased was unknown.

Remarkably, the truck driver was seen walking away from the horror incident physically unharmed but was treated at the scene for shock.

Two occupants of a vehicle that was struck by the falling light post were also uninjured and did not require further treatment.

Two witnesses in another car were also treated for shock. No pedestrians were injured from the falling light post.

Queensland Ambulance officer Adam Forley said crews were met with a “nasty scene” upon arrival and treated a total nine patients:“It’s a tragic day on Gold Coast roads when three patients die in one accident.”

Queensland Police Senior Sergeant Brendan Wilben praised bystanders who raced to assist the injured: “Many persons stopped to help and we grateful to the assistance of the public and we suspect this will have a terrible impact on many of them,” he said at the scene.

Brisbane Rd repoened just before 6pm Thursday as the forensic crash unit wrapped up investigations into what caused the collision.

Sen-Sgt Wilben said it was unclear what caused the vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic: “We’re looking into all factors, speed, any possible distractions.”.

TRAFFIC is once again moving on Brisbane Rd as forensic investigations into a horrific collision that left three people dead at Arundel begin to wrap up.

Two women were killed when a black Mitsubishi collided head-on with a truck after striking a light pole and veering into oncoming traffic just after midday.

A man reported to be the driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital in a critical condition but died upon arrival. It is understood the two women were rear passsengers of the vehicle.

A 49-year-old man, travelling in the same vehicle, is in a serious but stable condition at Gold Coast University Hospital.

Two women and a man have been killed after a car veered onto the wrong side of the road, smashed into a light post and collided with a truck on the Gold Coast.

Emergency services were called to the crash at the corner of Arundel Drive and Brisbane Rd just after 12.20pm Thursday involving nine people.

Police have confirmed two people died at the scene, while another died upon arrival to hospital. A man has been taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police say the three people killed were travelling eastbound in a black sedan that veered into the opposite lane of traffic on Brisbane Rd.

A 49-year-old male also travelling in the sedan was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Queensland Ambulance spokesman Adam Flory said nine patients were assessed at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle involved – a truck transporting a boat – walked away from the incident physically unharmed.

Two occupants of a vehicle that was struck by a falling light post were also uninjured and did not require further treatment.

No pedestrians were injured.

Two witnesses were treated for shock at the scene but did not require transport to hospital.

Queensland Police are working to identify the families of those deceased.

Parents at nearby Arundel State School have been warned to use Captain Cook Drive and avoid Arundel Drive for school pick up.

Earlier, fire crews used “cutting tools” to extricate one patient from the car.

Brisbane Rd westbound has since been reopened to traffic.
