Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 construction works shatter Mermaid Beach home

A Mermaid Beach man has revealed the devastating impact he says the light rail stage 3 construction works are having on his home.

A Mermaid Beach man claims light rail construction works have caused his home to “violently shake”, resulting in cracks and exploding glass panels.

Work is under way for the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 and is currently focused on moving sewerage and other services underground to make way for the planned tram track.

Shannon Bell said his family’s multi-level home on the Gold Coast Highway had been damaged as a result of the construction so far.

“The whole house shakes and vibrates,” he said.

“You can’t shake a house like that and not get cracks. It feels like a mini earthquake.”

On Friday night a glass panel divider in his family’s home “exploded”.

Mr Bell said the vibration from the light rail works was to blame for the cracks in the wall and the shattered glass.

“There was definitely movement in that wall, there are cracks in that wall,” he said.

“You don’t have to be an engineer to work this one out.

“My biggest concern was if one of my kids were walking up the stairs.

“I have got three storeys of glass staircase. If one of my family is walking upstairs and one of those things shattered, it would be horrendous.”

Mr Bell said he reported the damage and was sent a form to fill in.

A Goldlinq spokeswoman said a Mermaid Beach resident reached out to the project team on Tuesday morning about property damage.

“A damage claim form has been provided,” she said.

“We take the risk of property damage relating to construction seriously and established processes are in place to manage this matter.

“Stakeholders are encouraged to immediately report any property damage concerns to the project team for action.”

Mr Bell said others in the area had reported cracks in their homes since the works started.

“They don’t seem to really care too much about the residents,” he said.

“It’s almost like this kind of underlying arrogance that they can just do whatever the hell they want and keep moving forward with no consideration for people’s property or their sleep.

“My biggest concern is, are they going to keep doing this?”
