A POPULAR suburban shopping centre in central Palm Beach will undergo a multimillion-dollar redevelopment under plans filed with the Gold Coast City Council this week.
The two-storey complex’s owners will redevelop an 808sq m section of the Philippine Paradise building to create new retail spaces and a restaurant.
Existing residential units built at its rear will be removed and replaced by 530sq m of space for offices, a dining facility and an atrium.
It is currently home to a hairdressing business, a burger restaurant and a bottle shop.
The plans have been filed by company Uncle Buck, led by directors Roger Eric Buck and Cody Jardine Buck.
A planning report filed with council said the revamped complex, close to the future light rail route would help revitalise the suburban street.
“Currently a tired and under-utilised building, the proposed development is being sought to help revitalise and active the neighbourhood centre,” the report reads.
“Located 600m from the beach and within the highly sought-after medium density suburb of Palm Beach, the proposed development will help service the needs of the local community and provide greater opportunities for residents to ‘live, work and play’ within their locality.
“The applicant seeks to revitalise the Philippine Pde neighbourhood centre through the redevelopment of the subject site.”
A decision on the project by the council is expected in October. It is the latest Palm Beach landmark to be redeveloped amid a new generation of towers being built through the suburb ahead of the light rail’s extension from Burleigh Heads to the border.
