How to avoid committing a hit and run

A motorist has sent a teenage Gold Coast bike rider “flying” before bolting from the scene of an ugly alleged hit-and-run.

The victim, 14-year-old Harry Keeley, was struck by an SUV while riding to a school carnival.

His Biggera Waters father Andrew Keeley said his son was struck by the white car at the intersection of Broadwater St and Morala Ave at Runaway Bay about 8.20am on Thursday.

The driver “took off” and did not stop to make sure the teenager was all right, Mr Keeley told the Bulletin after his son filled him in in a distressed call, “crying on the end of the phone”.

“The car clipped and hit his rear wheel. He went flying,” Mr Keeley said. “It’s lucky he didn’t go far into Morala Ave, it’s quite busy in the morning.”

Mr Keeley was frightened by the unexpected call, but relieved his son did not cop a direct hit.

Harry suffered cuts, grazes and bad bruising, but dodged more serious injury. He was looked over by doctors and underwent X-rays.

Mr Keeley did not blame the driver for causing the crash, noting his son was riding on the wrong side of the road, but said he expected they would stop to help.

“He’s a very lucky lad.

“This stupid person has knowingly hit a kid and just bolted.

Mr Keeley thanked a woman known only as “Yolanda”, who sat with Harry until his dad arrived, and police for their efforts so far.

Runaway Bay officers were aware of the hit-and-run and in the early stage of investigations, a Queensland Police spokesman said.

He confirmed no charges had been laid by late Friday morning.

Mr Keeley added: “He (Harry) was heading to a school sporting carnival at Runaway Bay.”

“Funny enough, I don’t say it all the time, but I told him to ride safely and to be aware of what’s going on … ”

Mr Keeley said his son had not been wearing a helmet, despite his advice.

“Teens (and other bicycle riders) need to wear bloody helmets,” he warned.

“There’s consequences. My son didn’t hit his head, but it could have been a very different scenario.”

Mr Keeley also pleaded with the community to behave on city roads.
