Will Smith issues 'very strange and woke apology' to Chris Rock

COMEDIAN Chris Rock has been soaking up luxury beachfront downtime on the Gold Coast at its newest five-star hotel.

The visiting actor - infamously slapped on stage when MC at the Oscars by an irate Will Smith - took time out from dinner on Thursday night to chat with reality TV contestant Mike Gunner.

Gunner, who has been in Married at First Sight, noticed Rock in The Langham hotel bar restaurant in Surfers Paradise and decided to say hi and see if he could get a quick video chat with the star.

“He was wearing a beanie. And I supposed I was interrupting - he was having his dinner. But he looked up as I approached and I sort of pointed at him, smiled and said ‘Chris!’ like I knew him,” Gunner said.

“He smiled and said ‘Hello’ - he went to shake my hand but I broke my arm about a month and a half ago and I’m still not able to shake people’s hands without damaging it. So I had to offer my left hand which he shook and quickly showed him my surgery scar and explained why I wasn’t able to shake it,” Mr Gunner said.

“Because I was star struck with nothing to say, I said ‘Oh I’m a big fan of your movies’. I know he’s more well known for his comedy but he has done more than a dozen movies. He said ‘thank you very much’.

“(Then) I said ‘All except one’. He didn’t ask which one. And there was a pause which hung in the air and he said ‘Which one?’. And I said ‘Nurse Betty, wasn’t a fan’.”

Mr Gunner said their exchange ended soon after that, with Rock carrying on having his dinner.

He played a show on the Gold Coast back on August 9 at the Convention and Exhibition Centre before five shows across Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide since then before returning to the Gold Coast for some R&R.

He plays the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday night.
