A Gold Coast teacher has been placed on leave for showing an “inappropriate, adult” photo during class at a primary school.

The male teacher from Caningeraba State School in Burleigh Waters allegedly displayed the picture on a projector.

A Queensland Department of Education spokesman said they were aware of the incident, which occurred on February 19, “involving inappropriate material being displayed”.

“We hold all staff to the highest possible standards and employee misconduct is taken extremely seriously and managed through a fair, transparent and objective process.

“The teacher involved is not currently working at any Queensland state school.”

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said they received a report of the incident on March 14.

“Following investigations, it was determined that the incident was not wilful, and the matter has been referred back to the Department of Education for internal follow-up,” the spokeswoman said.

A parent said the teacher allegedly had his laptop connected to the projector to show students his social media accounts, an act which was in breach of the school’s guidelines.

“(That was) when an ‘adult’ picture appeared on the screen,” they said.

While the department said the school had contacted parents and carers “immediately”, the parent claimed the community were unaware until police began their investigations.

“The only reason anyone is aware it’s made it to the police is because detectives rang some parents to see if they had any more information or wanted to make a formal complaint,” the parent said.

“There has been no information from the school to the parents of the class about what’s happening.”

There is no suggestion the teacher in question is principal Dave Hartley, who has been on leave since late last year.
