Track construction for the Boost Mobile GC500 started on Monday as the countdown to the city’s premier racing event kicks off.

For the next six weeks the 3km race route through Surfers Paradise and Main Beach will see the streets transform into a supercars circuit ahead of the October 27-29 annual event.

Supercars event manager Matthew Ramsden said this year’s build would see most of the works take place at night to reduce any commuter disruption with only partial road closures during the day.

“It’s basically just concentrating on building the circuit, putting temporary concrete barriers around the circuit,” Mr Ramsden said.

“(We will be) focusing on the high traffic areas first and then moving into residential areas in Main Beach so there’s less disruption on residents and minimising that impact,” Mr Ramsden said.

“It’s a very similar process the team have done since 1991, so we will see no real changes to that process.”

Tedder Avenue’s Mano’s Bar & Grill owner Mick Ellison said local business operators wanted to assure the public, “Main Beach remains open” in the lead up to and over the event period.

“The message is Main Beach is closed – it’s not,” Mr Ellison said.

“You can get access right up until Wednesday, October 25, even from Wednesday you can get access from the Seaworld Drive entry,” Mr Ellison said.

“The restaurants are open, the cafes are open, the bakery is open – everyone is there for the people and I think that’s the message that needs to get out.

“The Gold Coast is unique, we can pivot and handle anything and Supercars is one of those events – we embrace it.”

Organisers and operators are bracing for record crowds at this year’s GC500 and a $42m injection into the Gold Coast economy with attendance predicted to exceed last year’s figure of 200,000.

“The Gold Coast is our party round, it’s been known as that since the Indy days and we’re set on making that bigger and better,” Mr Ramsden said.

“We’re really looking forward to the debut of our Gen3 category where Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro will race for the first time around the circuit, which is a massive coup for us.

“We’ll have wakeboarding for the first time on the river and a whole heap of new entertainment,” he said.
