Two dead in suburban shootings

A Darwin mother and “compassionate caregiver” who was shot by her ex-boyfriend in an attempted murder suicide is now awake as her Irish family rallies to her side.

Loved ones are raising money for Irish-born social worker Eileen Gibbons so she can be supported by her family in the wake of the horrific domestic violence related shooting in Millner.

NT Police said the 38-year-old was raced to hospital after being shot in the abdomen on Tuesday evening, October 3.

The body of a 35-year-old man was found at the Millner home, with a firearm close to his body.

Multiple neighbours said the mother and her one-year-old daughter were living in a domestic violence shelter after leaving her ex-boyfriend, the deceased 35-year-old.

Neighbours described hearing two gunshots, before the screaming began.

Days after the shooting Ms Gibbons was in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at Royal Darwin Hospital.

It is understood the mother-of-one is now conscious and called her mother from her hospital bed on Saturday, following two emergency surgeries.

Her Irish loved ones are rallying together in support, raising money so Ms Gibbon’s family can be by her side.

A Go Fund Me set up by her cousin Enda O’Brien has raised €95,747 ($A158,357) for Ms Gibbon’s family to cover travel, accommodation and “unforeseen expenses” as they care for the injured mother.

“Her mother Ann, and other family members, are desperate to be by her side as she embarks on her path to recovery,” Ms O’Brien said.

Ms O’Brien described Ms Gibbons as a “dedicated social care worker, mother and friend to many”.

“Eileen, a compassionate caregiver known for her dedication to her patients, now needs our help to overcome the challenges she faces,” she said.

Ms O’Brien said the ultimate plan would be to bring Ms Gibbons back to Ireland.

According to her LinkedIn, Ms Gibbons has been working in Darwin for six years as a social worker at the Salvation Army, Medibank, Charles Darwin University, and previously as a forensic disability and drug and alcohol case manager at Territory Families.

Her former employer Territory Families has not confirmed if Ms Gibbons was part of the Family Safety Framework — an ‘action-based integrated service response’ for people at high risk of serious injury or death from domestic violence.

It comes after government documents revealed expert advice from the Territory’s Domestic Family and Sexual Violence Interagency Coordination and Reform Office was ignored by the NT government, with a $180m action plan over five years scaled back to $20m over two years.

The NT government has called for a needs-based federal funding for domestic violence prevention.
