GleNTi back from the dead with Greek festival to take place over Darwin Show weekend

WHILE the passing of the Queen’s Birthday weekend meant there wouldn’t be a GleNTi festival as we know it this year, the Greek Community is still planning to go ahead with a cut down version of the event

WHILE the passing of the Queen’s Birthday weekend meant there wouldn’t be a GleNTi festival as we know it this year, the Greek Community will still have a chance to showcase their culture in the Top End.

Greek Orthodox community president Nicholas Poniris said this morning that a cut-down version of the festival would take place over the Royal Darwin show weekend, and would be a great opportunity for Territorians to enjoy life again.

“I’m sure the community is looking out for something like this to come along,” he said on Mix 104.9 radio.

“It will be a full day event. It’ll be for everybody.

“We’ll have a lot of local entertainment and dance group. We’ll have a few things going on.”

Mr Poniris said it would also become a more accessible event to ensure families could afford the day out.

“That corona(virus) has really put a sting in everything,” he said.

“It is tough at the moment so we’re looking to make it affordable for families.”

It means there will still be a Greek festival of some form for the 32nd year running.

However, there is a lot of work to do to ensure the event goes ahead, he said.

“(Today) is the first of many meetings we’ll have in the next seven days because we only have a short window,” Mr Poniris said.

“We do have to take into consideration things like social distancing so it will be a smaller event.”

The GleNTi usually draws 40,000 visitors to indulge in mountains of souvlaki, octopus and yiros, however Mr Poniris said he expected there would be a lot less of everything at this year’s event.
