A man who was present when a Whittington mother was fatally shot in her home has faced court for his alleged “fetish for firearms”.
Torquay man Harry Watson, 29, was living with Emily Miller, 31, and her children during November 2018 when she suffered a fatal gunshot wound to her stomach.
In the hours before her death, Mr Watson posted a disturbing image on social media platform Snapchat of his watch and what appeared to be the barrel of a gun in his hand.
Placed over the picture were the words: “You know what time it is? Time for this b---- to get cut off her s--- chat”.
Mr Watson was not charged in relation to her death but pleaded guilty to drug and gun charges in the Geelong Magistrates Court.
A Coroner’s Court investigation into Ms Miller’s death is ongoing.
Mr Watson returned to the Geelong Magistrates Court on Thursday on firearm related offences and was bailed to his mother’s house.
The court heard Mr Watson was visiting a Laverton medical centre when police approached and searched his satchel bag.
They allegedly found firearm ammunition inside.
At the time, Mr Watson had been on bail after police allegedly found between 3-4g of heroin in his car.
His defence lawyer, Adrian Paull, said it was “very foolish” of Mr Watson to have ammunition in his possession given he was on a firearm prohibitions order and was regularly checked by police.
Mr Paull asked the court to bail Mr Watson, adding he was “well known to police” and would be noticed if he was out of the home after curfew.
Police did not “strenuously” oppose granting Mr Watson bail.
Magistrate Simon Guthrie granted him bail after confirming his mother would call police if he breached any of the conditions.
He warned Mr Watson against breaching them.
“You now know, if you haven’t already, you’re well known to police so they will zero in on you,” Mr Guthrie said.
“You have an unusual fetish, it seems, for firearms and ammunition.”
Mr Watson is due to return to court next month.
