Thousands of Bellarine residents lost power on Thursday morning after a bizarre incident involving an animal.

A PowerCor spokesman confirmed a swan had hit power lines, leaving more than 3500 homes and businesses in St Leonards without electricity.

The swan sadly did not survive.

It’s not the first time an animal has left Geelong residents in the dark.

Earlier this year, a possum was the cause of a fault which impacted customers in Drumcondra and North Geelong.

A duck hit a high voltage transformer in October 2022, which led to 7500 homes with no power.

In 2019, a cockatoo became entangled in a power pole and forced shoppers to evacuate Westfield and Market Square shopping centres.
