Safety issues have forced the immediate closure of a Geelong waste facility, with City Hall taking action after receiving a concerning report.

It is unclear when the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre and Transfer Station in Douro St, North Geelong, will reopen after major structural issues were identified in a building condition report.

City of Greater Geelong chief executive Ali Wastie issued a statement Wednesday evening confirming the closure, a decision she said was made to ensure the safety of customers, staff and contractors.

“We are currently investigating all of the issues and communicating with all impacted staff and contractors as a first priority,” she said.

“While the site’s immediate closure is a challenging decision, community safety is our highest priority and we will not compromise.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of the community.”

Ms Wastie said residents could dispose of garden organics, soil and rubble at other locations within 15km of the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre, including Transformer Metals in North Geelong, Green Care Mulching in Moolap, and Fyansford Waste Disposal.

The Douro St site operated seven days a week from 7.30am to 4.15pm.

It accepted a range of items not permitted in council’s rubbish collection, including paint and electronic waste.
