Rail line reopens after Inverleigh derailment

The Adelaide-Melbourne rail line will re-open after a dramatic derailment at Inverleigh.

The Melbourne-Adelaide rail line, which was closed due to a train derailment at Inverleigh last Monday, will re-open on Monday night.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) worked with contractors around the clock over the last week to clear the track and restore the rail line to full service.

The repair work included replacing ballast, rail, and concrete sleepers, and culvert works.

ARTC thanked customers and the local community for their patience and understanding during the challenging time.

Wild weather lashes Geelong

Geelong residents are continuing to experience strong winds and rain throughout Monday as the SES responded to hundreds of calls overnight for fallen trees and flooding.

SES Barwon South West unit responded to 73 calls for assistance in the last 24 hours to 6am Monday morning including 59 for downed trees, six for building damage and two for flooding.

SES Victoria received more than 491 requests for help in the last 24 hours, mainly for fallen trees.

Coastal areas and elevated parts of Victoria experienced the most damage.

A severe weather warning remains in place the entire state by the bureau.

Winds are forecast to continue overnight but ease during Tuesday morning.

Powercor confirmed earlier power outages in Newcomb and Leopold have been restored.

Residents left without power as strong winds hit Geelong

Geelong residents haven woken up to a cold front on Monday morning as strong winds ripped through the state on Sunday night.

The bureau has issued a severe weather warning for damaging west to south-westerly winds across the state.

Gusts are expected to reach 50 to 70km per hour across the region but winds of up to 100km per hour are likely.

Winds reached 70km per hour in Lara on Sunday while 60km per hour gusts were recorded in Geelong, Bannockburn and Torquay.

Residents in Newcomb and Leopold are experiencing power outages on Monday morning.

Powercor confirmed the black out affected more than 1100 customers including the Leopold Plaza on the Bellarine Highway.

Outages are currently being investigated and expected to be restored by 10:30am.

Showers, possible thunderstorms and hail are expected during Monday and the coming week.

Locals are being advised to secure loose items on their property, be aware that trees may fall due to saturated grounds and stay indoors.

A minor flood warning remains in place for the Barwon River as waters continue to rise.

It comes as cars were bogged in thick mud during A Day on the Green in Geelong after heavy rain hit the area.
