A deep sinkhole disrupted traffic on a busy road in Ocean Grove on Saturday, after it was stumbled upon by an off duty police officer.
Police, SES and Geelong council were called to the sink hole on Bonnyvale Rd just after 2.30pm on Saturday.
A police officer on the ground, who was directing traffic around the sink hole said an officer who lived in the area had noticed it while off duty.
He said cars had just been driving around it.
“Lucky they didn’t hit it,” he said.
The sink hole was less than half a metre wide at the opening when discovered, but revealed a large hollow area under the surface of the road.
Groups of children, locals and long weekend visitors watched on and SES volunteers widened the hole to fill in.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said as a road issue, the sinkhole would be delt with by local council.
