Pregnant woman’s Covid scare sends Geelong hospital staff, patients into isolation

A pregnant woman who attended Geelong hospital for maternity care last week has since tested positive for coronavirus, sending staff and patients into isolation.

A pregnant woman who attended Geelong hospital last week has tested positive for coronavirus.

Barwon Health spokeswoman Kate Bibby said the woman came to the hospital for maternity care and subsequently tested positive on October 5.

She was later transferred to Royal Women’s Hospital for ongoing care.

“This has impacted a small number of patients and staff who have been tested and asked to isolate,” Ms Bibby said.

“There have been no other positive cases associated with this patient. Our staff are working in recommended PPE in all clinical areas and this minimises the requirement to furlough large numbers of staff.”

It’s understood staff are also due to undergo further routine testing.

As of Sunday, Geelong hospital had 42 Covid patients, including 14 in ICU.

There were 15 new cases recorded across the Barwon region on Sunday.
