Woman dead, three remain in hospital after Bellarine crash

Three people, including a two-year-old girl, remain in hospital following Friday afternoon’s fatal Portarlington crash.

Three people remain in hospital after Friday’s head-on collision on the Bellarine Peninsula that killed a woman.

A 65-year-old woman from Portarlington died at the scene of the collision on Friday afternoon.

One of the injured, a two-year-old girl, is in the Royal Children’s Hospital following the crash at Portarlington.

On Sunday, the girl was in a stable condition with upper-body injuries after she was taken to the hospital on Friday night.

The girl’s condition has improved since the crash on the Portarlington-Geelong Rd.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a two-vehicle, high-impact collision on Portarlington-Geelong Rd about 3:35pm.

Four people from the other vehicle were taken to hospital including an eight-week old baby, a two-year-old child, a male driver and a female passenger.

The two-year-old child was transferred to the Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne overnight in a critical but stable condition while the eight-week-old baby has been discharged.

One person was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and another was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital, both in a critical condition.

Three CFA units from the Drysdale and Portarlington brigades were on scene, along with SES and FRV crews.

A nearby resident, Keith Bissell, 71, said he was having a smoke when he heard a loud “bang”.

“I heard a bang and by the time I walked downstairs and saw what the hell was going on ... there are police cars everywhere,” he said.

“It was horrific.”

Mr Bissell said the area where the accident occurred was “dangerous”.

“It’s a problem area,” he said.

Another resident on the Portarlington-Geelong Rd said he knew something tragic had happened when he heard helicopters.

“When I knew the helis turned their engines off, I knew it was bad,” he said.

“It looks tragic.”

The road is closed in both directions at the site with a detour in place on Point Richards Rd.
