A Geelong magistrate says it was only by “pure luck” that a woman who was allegedly stabbed on a South Geelong street did not die.

Jordan Powell, of no fixed address, fronted Geelong Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with intentionally causing serious injury.

It’s alleged Mr Powell, 32, stabbed a 73-year-old woman multiple times as she walked along Mundy St about 7pm on Tuesday.

As of Wednesday afternoon the woman remained in Geelong hospital in a serious condition

Mr Powell did not make an application for bail, but appeared in an agitated state and was heard yelling through the dock: “I was at home at the time, there is no evidence to say I did it.”

Magistrate Ann McGarvie said the alleged offending was very serious, and despite Mr Powell asking for a bail application, there was a very low chance he would be successful.

“It is only pure luck perhaps regarding the direction of the knife into her body that she hasn’t died,” Ms McGarvie said.

“Police are of the view that you are the attacker and are conducting ongoing investigations to confirm that, so they can provethat it was you,” she said.

The matter will be listed in the courts again on September 12 for a committal mention.

Police spokeswoman Leonie Johnson said it was alleged the woman was confronted as she was walking home from a family member’shouse.

“When she reached the corner of Bellerine St, it’s alleged a man approached her from behind and stabbed her several timesbefore walking away,” Ms Johnson said.

Nearby resident Scott Croker, who walks down Mundy St daily, said many locals had been left shaken by the assault.

“It is really disturbing. It sounds like drugs to me,” he said.

“Normal people don’t do that kind of thing but people that take meth do.”

Ms Johnson said the woman was helped by nearby residents and was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said the callous alleged assault “boggles the mind.”

“I wouldn’t expect anything like this to happen,” she said. “I walk this street every day.”

Mundy St is close to GMHBA Stadium and South Geelong train station.

The incident comes days after a man was found with suspected stab wounds in a North Geelong carpark, amid a spike in knifecrime across the region.
