Cosmetic registered nurses say the cosmetic industry is booming as clinicians take a more holistic approach to treatment.
Bonny Skin founder Dani Barr has been qualified since 2017 after a 20 year career in nursing.
She said she enjoyed the different pace and atmosphere cosmetics brought, although during Covid lockdowns she did return to hospital nursing while her business was closed.
“The business went up and down during lockdowns understandably but when we came out of it people were so happy to see other people and get treatments done it really boomed,” she said.
“People wanted to make sure their skin looked the best it could ... it has just been growing ever since.”
Ms Barr said the industry continued to grow as new products and treatments emerged.
“We’re finding a lot of people really care about their skin and they don’t want to age as quickly as their parents or grandparents did,” she said.
“It’s not about turning back the clock but rather slowing the process down and looking your best.
“We also look after the skin so we have a holistic approach.
“We get clients who are in their 40s and 50s who say they wish they had been doing this back in their 20s and people in their 60s saying they didn’t have clinics like this when they were younger.”
Cosmetic nurse injector Courtney Granger began her cosmetics career in 2014 in London and has since worked in Melbourne and Geelong.
“I ensure I have a good understanding of someone’s lifestyle and skin care, and I’m huge on education, not just treatment,” she said.
Ms Granger said she loved how her role was a combination of clinical knowledge and skills, and creativity.
“I always struggled with the nursing aspect of my career because I am a very creative person so I love the synergy of those things in aesthetics,” she said.
The Geelong Advertiser is inviting readers to vote for the cosmetic injector they believe is at the top of their field.
Lara Bain of Australian Skin Face Body Geelong is one of 30 nominees.
Ms Bain said she was excited and surprised to be nominated.
“I have been in the industry for a long time,” she said.
“I have been a nurse for more than 20 years and specialising since 2006.
“I have a very patient-based approach and I love doing what I do.”
Ms Bain said as well as being a cosmetic nurse practitioner, she is a mentor and works in educating doctors and nurses about the industry.
“I love the research and have collaborated with cosmetic doctors and plastic surgeons across Australia,” she said.
Ms Bain said she enjoyed building relationships with patients, some of who she has known for a long time.
“It’s about replacing what’s lost, not adding to what is there,” she said.
