A Mount Duneed woman has been fined hundreds of dollars after tossing a cigarette from her parked car.

A witness reported seeing her toss a butt from her Kia Rio at the Armstrong Creek Town Centre in August 2023.

Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria said the woman pleaded not guilty in the Geelong Magistrates’ Court this week on a charge of unlawfully depositing litter, namely a cigarette butt.

She was fined $385 and ordered to pay EPA Victoria $93 in legal costs.

The court found the charge was proved but did not record a conviction.

The EPA said the incident should act as a warning.

“The offence took place in August 2023, but as we enter the hotter months it sounds a warning,” the authority said in a statement.

“Discarded cigarettes are recognised as a cause of bush and grass fires.”
