Dangerous hoon driving in Lara

Lara parents are worried hoon drivers are performing skids near family homes after a learner driver was charged for allegedly doing a burnout in a residential street.

Police said a 16-year-old boy was charged for allegedly hoon driving around the northern suburbs last weekend.

It is alleged he reached speeds of up to 133km/h in a 70km/h zone while driving a white Ford Falcon along Bacchus Marsh Rd in Corio on June 10.

He also allegedly conducted burnouts around the streets of Lara, including along Bella Julia Place.

Lara resident Rachael Smith said she woke up about 4am on Sunday to the sound of “screeching” tyres as the alleged driver did a burn out in front of her Lara home.

She said she looked out the window and saw clouds of smoke.

“By that time, my kid woke up screaming,” Ms Smith said.

“In the morning, I walked outside and there were tyre marks.

“If that car had lost control, my house was in the firing line.”

Ms Smith said it was “quite scary” the alleged driver was a teenager.

“(Teens) are not experienced, my main question is how does a 16-year-old have access to a car?’.”

Lara resident Joel, who witheld his surname, said he also heard the car travelling in and out of his street on Sunday morning and allegedly performing burnouts.

He said he has also seen the car in the area before.

“They’ve come into the street before speeding and they didn’t have back tyres on their wheels last time,” he said.

Hoon drivers in Lara

Police said the teenager was also seen doing burnouts on McClelland Ave and Mill Rd in Lara in the early hours of Monday.

Ms Smith said she was told by other residents the car was “flicking rocks” onto nearby houses and windows.

A video shared on social media shows a man lying across the bonnet of the Ford Falcon while the driver performs a burnout at a petrol station in Bannockburn.

The Geelong Advertiser understands the video was taken over the King’s Birthday long weekend.

Joel said the video was “pretty silly”.

“I was shocked ... you can be an idiot in the car, but to actually be on top of the car is next level,” he said.

Police said the teen was arrested on Tuesday morning and charged with a series of driving offences relating to speed and reckless conduct.

The Ford Falcon was impounded at a cost of $1425 and police said the teen would appear at a children’s court at a later date.

In a statement to the Geelong Advertiser, police said officers would continue to patrol hoon hotspots.

“Our message is clear – if you put the community or yourself at risk through reckless behaviour on our roads, you will be caught,” the statement read.
