A beloved thoroughbred was so scared after she was shot in the leg with an arrow she sliced her body while jumping fences following the “disgusting” attack.
Owner Kate Adatins found her four-year-old horse Muffin, bloodied and injured, in her driveway after the terrifying late-night ordeal.
“It’s disgusting,” Ms Adatins said.
Muffin had to be put down on October 15.
Ms Adatins said her dog started to bark erratically at 10.30pm and went outside to find Muffin standing in the driveway with serious injuries to one of her front legs.
“I had a quick feel of her injuries on her leg,” she said.
“There was a perfect entry and exit wound that was the same size as an arrow.”
When she went to her horses’ paddock after 11pm, she found an arrow covered with blood and skin.
“She was obviously scared and wanted to get away so went over the fences and sliced her body up,” she said.
Ms Adatins believes her horse was shot intentionally.
“I’ve had a few people contact me and say they saw three kids at the edge of my property running away and with hoods over their faces,” she said.
“It’s terrible.
“I can’t even sleep properly anymore because I go around every hour just to check the horses.”
Ms Adatins moved into the property in January and cares for 16 horses.
She said has previously found arrows on her property but away from the horses.
“It was like someone had gone along the river to shoot fish or rabbits,” she said.
“But now it’s come to one of my horses being put down.
“It’s horrible.”
Ms Adatins has been around horses her whole life and has never experienced anything like this.
She handed the bows into police on Wednesday and officers are now investigating the incident.
“Police have received reports of a horse being shot with an arrow in Lara,” a police spokeswoman said.
“It is understood a horse was shot by an arrow at a rural property on Canterbury Rd East about 11pm.
“Officers are making enquiries and the investigation remains ongoing.”
