A Mount Duneed father whose concreting business went bust during Covid sold drugs and weapons to undercover police he met outside a police station.

Jed Jeanes, 29, was sentenced to a minimum of two years and six months jail for a number of charges including trafficking drugs and firearms.

Jeanes met two undercover officers outside the Geelong police station on May 31, 2022 and struck up a conversation with them.

They offered to drive him home.

Thinking he had just made two new friends, Jeanes offered the covert policemen a tour of his property and pointed out where drugs and firearms were located around the premises.

In exchange for driving him home, Jeanes supplied an officer with a deodorant bottle filled with 1,4 Butanediol.

On June 21, 2022, covert operatives purchased two litres of 1,4 Butanediol for $5500 and also purchased a shotgun for $7000.

On June 27, at 6am, police searched Jeanes’ home and seized a duffel bag containing a loaded revolver firearm, a bag of cannabis, a red container containing 350 rounds, $2600 in cash, a number of plastic bags containing cocaine, as well as bags of methamphetamine.

Police also found a duffel bag with sets of keys for a number of vehicles, and discovered a sawn-off shotgun in one of the cars.

Another vehicle was also found at Armstrong Creek, which also contained a further eight firearms.

Jeanes was also arrested on the same day as the search and spent 225 days in custody before being released on bail.

The court heard Jeanes had started his own concreting business in 2020, and hired new staff who used methamphetamine during Covid.

The court heard Jeanes became “hooked” on methamphetamine after trying it, and then things went “downhill fast”.

Judge Martine Marich said Jeanes’ business collapsed in the context of his heavy substance abuse and then began to support himself and his family through illegal activities.

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Marich said Jeanes was motivated to abstain from drugs and now understood the serious and devastating effects of his behaviour after completing a rehab program while he was out on bail.

Judge Marich jailed Jeanes for four years and said he must serve at least two years and six months before he will be eligible for parole.
