The energy regulator has launched an investigation after a man suffered an electric shock when a crane struck powerlines at Highton last week.

Emergency services attended the scene at North Valley Rd in Highton on Friday afternoon amid reports a crane had fallen onto power lines on the opposite side of the road.

A 37-year-old man, who was mowing his lawn nearby, was rushed to hospital after he received an electric shock when live lines landed within 10m. He was taken to Geelong hospital and released later that evening.

According to Energy Save Victoria, the operator allegedly moved the crane down the driveway at the worksite with the boom extended, leading to it rolling.

A licensed electrician working nearby was able to warn onlookers to stay away and advise the operator to stay inside the crane until the power had been turned off.

The regular is investigating the incident, which ESV Chairperson and Commissioner Marnie Williams said could have been easily prevented.

“This incident was completely avoidable and there are two important messages to take away from it. Machinery operators need to ensure they always follow the correct procedures for the equipment they are operating,” she said.

“It also reinforces the message to stay more than 10 metres away from fallen powerlines because you can still be shocked.”

More than 600 properties were without power overnight, with service unable to be restored until the following morning.

Energy Safe Victoria recommended residents:

STAY at least 10m away from fallen power lines

IF MACHINERY does hit power lines, stay inside the vehicle.

UNDERSTAND No Go Zones and rules around safety clearances for overhead powerlines

ENSURE an ESV spotter is on hand when operating machinery near powerlines

DISPLAY a Look Up and Live sticker on machinery or equipment
