The victim of a tragic tree fall in the holiday town of Moama has been identified as a much-loved Inverleigh grandmother and talented golfer.
Tributes are pouring in for Sue Holmes, 63, who was killed when destructive winds brought down a tree onto her cabin at the Tasman Holiday Parks, on the banks of the Murray River near the NSW-Victoria border, on Monday.
She had been asleep with her husband at the time of the “unthinkable” tragedy, with NSW police officers discovering her inside the badly damaged cabin.
Ms Holmes was an avid golfer and former member of the Inverleigh Golf Club.
Many have been left heartbroken by her death.
Her devastated family described her as an “incredible wife, mum, nan, sister, cousin, aunty, friend and everything in between” remarking that “the world has lost such an amazing woman”.
“Her smile lit up the room,” her brother, Doug Markham, said.
“She loved to golf, go to the tennis and enjoy life, but most of all, she loved her family.
“She’d always go the extra mile for her family.
“Her presence will be missed by all who knew her.”
Ms Holmes was a regular trophy winner at the Inverleigh Golf Club, with one member describing her loss as a “devastating tragedy”.
“It has hit the club pretty hard,” he said.
A spokesman from the club said they were “extremely saddened” to hear of her passing as a result of the “tragic accident”.
“A local golfer and former club member and Ladies Captain, Sue’s smile will always be remembered and sorely missed throughout the district,” he said.
Her husband, also 63, was treated by paramedics for injuries to his right hand and taken to Echuca Hospital following the accident.
It’s understood the couple had bought the cabin just a year ago.
A Tasman Holiday Parks spokesman said immediate support was being provided to staff on site who were “very distressed by this terrible event”.
“We are devastated by the tragic events overnight at our park, Merool on the Murray, in Moama,” the spokesman said.
“We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of both cabin occupants and our thoughts are with the gentleman currently being treated in hospital.”
NSW police detective chief inspector Jy Brown said an arborist attended the caravan park regularly to check the trees.
“Our investigations so far has led us to believe they were inspected recently,” he said.
NSW police will prepare a report for the coroner.
