A Geelong school teacher and cricketer is fighting for life in a Mexican hospital after suddenly falling ill while on honeymoon with his wife.
Grovedale couple Whitney and Layton McCann had been travelling through America and Mexico in celebration of their April 5 wedding when their dream trip turned into a living nightmare.
Mr McCann suddenly became ill in the coastal surfing town of Playa del Carmen about 10 days ago and has been placed in an induced coma.
“It’s terrifying,” his distraught wife said.
She said he woke one morning in “excruciating pain” before being rushed to the Amerimed hospital.
Doctors quickly identified Mr McCann was suffering from pancreatitis, the inflammation of the pancreas, a gland behind the stomach that produces digestive enzymes and hormones.
A few days after his admission, doctors stormed into his room and told the pair he was being taken to intensive care.
He has been sedated and on a ventilator for four days and remains in a critical but stable condition.
“When he was in general I could stay with him, but now I’m only allowed to see him for two hours a day,” Ms McCann said.
“It’s very, very stressful.”
The pair were in the dark as to what is next.
“I have no idea what the future looks like, how long he’s going to be in ICU, let alone when we can come home,” she said.
“It’s been an emotional roller coaster, it’s also scary not knowing if we can get more accommodation, the unknowns are quite scary.”
She said the trip highlighted the importance of travel insurance, which has allowed her to afford to stay in the country.
Mr McCann is a popular member of the North Geelong Cricket Club and a teacher at Lara Primary School.
His wife is a well-known hairdresser at Doll House Hair Artistry in Geelong West.
Both of their mothers have travelled to Mexico to assist
Her sister, Bronte Holland, has set up a GoFundMe to help cover the cost of accommodation and these flights.
It had raised more than $25,000 as of Thursday afternoon.
