Residents in Geelong and the Surf Coast thought someone was breaking into their homes as a 3.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Melbourne on Sunday night.
The earthquake struck 3km below Sunbury about 11:40pm.
Locals in Corio, Mount Duneed, Armstrong Creek and Torquay posted on community groups, saying they felt the tremor.
One resident said: “(It) woke me up as our old windows were crackling. Felt one sort of shake and then nothing.”
Some locals said their windows and doors were shaking which led them to believe their houses were being broken into.
Another resident said it sounded like a “pretty loud rumble”.
The SES did not receive any calls for help in the Geelong or Surf Coast areas relating to the earthquake.
Barwon Health said no one presented to the emergency department following the tremor.
Seismology Research Centre head Adam Pascale said the earthquake was the largest within 40km of Melbourne in more than 120 years.
The centre received reports from more than 21,000 people with residents as far north as Bendigo and far south of Hobart saying they felt the shake.
