Geelong’s top cop has issued a warning to those planning on carrying weapons this New Year’s Eve, as police call on revellers to look after each other.
Weapons, illegal fireworks and drink driving are among Victoria Police’s priorities across the New Year period, Western Region Division 1 Superintendent Michael Reid said on Friday morning.
“Police will have a highly visible presence across Geelong and the Surf Coast over New Year’s Eve to keep community safe and prevent anti-social behaviour,” Superintendent Reid said.
Uniform officers will be supported by the police’s air wing, highway patrol, public order response team, dog squad, mounted branch and water police across Geelong and the Surf Coast.
Superintendent Reid said police expected pubs, clubs and restaurants would be “packed” on New Year’s Eve.
“We encourage everyone to celebrate safely and responsibly; don’t resort to violence and look after yourself and your mates,” he said.
Geelong and Torquay will once again be “designated areas” under the weapons control act, meaning police will have extra powers to stop and search people.
“The reality is a very small section of our community choose to carry weapons and we know these operations serve as a strong deterrent,” Superintendent Reid said.
“If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about.
“Our message to those who carry weapons is clear: just don’t. There is a high chance you’ll be searched, caught, and charged.”
The warning comes two months after Jayme “Chugs” Sykes was fatally stabbed on Little Malop St in October.
Police will also be out in force on the roads and at Beyond the Valley festival in Hesse.
