Detectives have released a video in relation to a fire that threatened to wipe out a number of shops in Geelong West.
The footage, captured by a security camera on Friday night, shows a figure walking past a driveway at 10.25pm – about 30 minutes before a suspicious fire started on Minerva Rd at about 10.50pm.
Geelong West firefighter Harry Williams, who attended the blaze, said it was only by chance the damage “didn’t spread to multiple shops” along the food and retail precinct.
“If it weren’t for us driving past, by the time the fire would’ve been found and called in, the damage would’ve been a lot worse,” he said.
“The quick work of our crew in breathing apparatus saw the fire brought under control quickly.”
It’s believed the fire was started at the rear of a milk bar on the street, which is home to a number of restaurants, cafes, a hair dresser and a post office.
It also neighbours the St Joseph’s College’s year nine campus and Clonard College.
A Victoria Police spokesman said anyone able to identify the person in the video should call the Geelong CIU.
“Police believe the person in this footage may be able to assist with our inquiries into the fire,” the spokesman said.
It comes after a number of recent fires across Geelong, including a tragic blaze on Monday morning that killed a Newtown woman.
Any information relating to the identity of this person in the video should call Geelong Police on 03 5225 3288 or contact Crime Stoppers.
