Former Cat Ray Card stayed silent in his first court appearance over a crash that killed his long-term partner.

Mr Card appeared online for a filing hearing in the Geelong Magistrates Court on Tuesday, leaving his lawyer, Tony Hargreaves, to do the talking.

The former Geelong Cats footballer was charged with culpable driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death over a crash on Geelong Ring Road on November 16 in which his partner, Mandy McDonald, was killed.

The couple was travelling in a Ford Ranger that collided with a BMW in which a 23-year-old Lara man and a 19-year-old Lovely Banks woman were travelling.

Mr Card, of Grovedale, was severely injured in the crash.

He was taken to hospital under police guard and was charged on November 19.

On Tuesday, police prosecutor Kathleen Hewitt applied for an extension in time for the handup of the brief in the matter, with the prosecution seeking 14 weeks.

The probe into the crash is ongoing, with investigators still awaiting the results of blood analysis and toxicology reports for both Mr Card and his late partner.

A medical examiner’s report won’t be ready for 12 weeks, the court heard, with a mechanical examination of the Ford Ranger Mr Card was driving and expert collision reconstruction report also likely to take a similar amount of time.

Investigators will also examine Mr Card’s mobile phone, and statements are still in the process of being collected, the court heard.

Magistrate Ann McGarvie granted the police’s application.

“Given the number of things that are going to take 12 or so weeks, 14 weeks to serve the hand up brief in this situation is appropriate,” Ms McGarvie said.

The police must deliver the brief to Mr Card’s lawyers by February 25 and Mr Card will reappear in court for a committal mention six weeks later, on April 8.

Card, the president of the Cats’ Past Players group, played 110 games for the Cats between 1977 and 1987 and won the Carji Greeves Medal in 1983.
