UPDATE: A 29-year-old Melbourne man driving an alleged stolen vehicle has been identified as the victim of a tragic fatal smash on a major Geelong road.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Melissa Seach confirmed the new details about the ute involved in the disturbing crash on School Rd in Corio on Friday.
The incident closed the street for almost six hours.
“The deceased is a 29-year-old Bentleigh man,” Ms Seach said.
“The investigation remains ongoing.”
FRIDAY: A major Corio road closed for much of the day due to a fatal smash is now open, with witnesses describing the chaotic scenes after the “pretty disturbing” tragedy.
Vic Roads and Victoria Police have left the scene at School Rd, Corio after a man was killed near the railway crossing on Friday morning about 7.30am.
The road between Shell Pde and the Princes Highway was closed from 7.50am until about 1pm.
“It was horrific,” said one staff member at nearby Winter and Taylor Paint and Panel.
“The road (closure) didn’t affect us as much as it was blocked half way down the road.
“We all start work at 8am and we found out someone had died when we arrived.
“It was bad.”
An employee at wholesale producer Glynn Harvey Pty Ltd said the scene was “a shock to see.”
“We thought it must have been something with the train, it was a shock to see it,” he said.
“It did look pretty disturbing.
“There was everything everywhere on the road.”
Victoria Police are investigating the incident.
EARLIER: A man has died following a horrific crash in Corio on Friday morning.
Geelong Highway Patrol officers understand a driver lost control of a ute on School Rd and collided with a street sweeper truck about 7.30am.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Melissa Seach said the male driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and died at the scene.
“He is yet to be formally identified,” Sergeant Seach said.
“The driver of the truck stopped at the scene and is currently assisting police with their inquiries.”
School Rd, between Shell Pde and the Princes Highway, was closed as of 7.50am.
A message from VicRoads said emergency services were redirecting traffic via St Georges Rd.
Police remain on scene investigating the cause of the collision and are appealing for information.
