Two young girls were taken to hospital after being pulled from the surf and a woman was rescued after tumbling from a cliff as thousands descended on the region’s beaches for the unofficial long weekend.

Emergency services were called to RAAFs beach in Ocean Grove late on Saturday afternoon.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said paramedics treated two primary school aged girls after they were pulled from the water.

They were taken to Geelong hospital in a stable condition, the spokesman said.

On Sunday, a Barwon Health spokesman said the two girls had been discharged on Saturday.

The Geelong Advertiser understands the two girls were pulled from the water by their parents, before being treated by paramedics.

Several hours later, a woman in her 50s was flown to hospital after a reported cliff fall at the Esplanade, St Leonards.

Ambulance Victoria received the call just after 11pm.

An SES spokesman said volunteers from SES Bellarine were called to help access the patient.

“Volunteers attended the scene and were able to stretcher the patient from a beach, before transferring them into the care of AV,” the spokesman said.

The woman was treated for upper-body injuries, flown to Melbourne and taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

As of Sunday afternoon she remained in a stable condition according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Both incidents came after a ferry worker was flown to hospital in a “large-scale medical evacuation” after an accident on a vessel in Queenscliff on Friday.

The Searoad Ferries crew member, believed to be aged in his 50s, fell down a set of stairs. He was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Friday night.

Paramedics responded to the incident at Queenscliff about 8.45pm. On Sunday, the man remained in a stable condition.

A Searoad Ferries spokeswoman said a staff member experienced a medical emergency on-board at the end of their shift, outside ferry operational hours, on Friday night.

“A large scale medical evacuation was conducted to get the staff member off the vessel as his condition did not enable him to be carried down stairs,” she said.

“This involved multiple units from Fire Rescue Victoria, CFA, SES and police.

“We would like to thank all emergency services for their efforts and to all the Searoad Ferries staff members who were on hand to assist.”

A WorkSafe spokeswoman said the watchdog was looking in to the incident.

“WorkSafe inspectors are making inquiries and will determine if further action is required,” the spokeswoman said.

The busy weekend could be a sign of things to come as summer looms, with many treating the weekend before Melbourne Cup Day as a four-day weekend.

The warm weather is set to continue into the week, with temperatures on Cup day expected to reach 24C, before hitting 34C on Wednesday.
