Brawl breaks out near Portarlington beach

Shocking footage of a disturbing brawl allegedly involving teenagers from a Geelong high school has been captured on camera amid claims it is being widely circulated among students.

At least one parent of a Bellarine Secondary College student said she had been left “shocked” and “traumatised” after being shown a video of a young girl being viciously bashed in Portarlington over the Australia Day long weekend.

The footage shows a teen being set upon by three girls before being brutally kicked in the body on several occasions as she lay on the ground.

She is then repeatedly punched in the head before being kicked in the face as she attempts to rise to her feet.

It is alleged the fight broke out on Pier St on January 27.

The video was shared among students at the school and on social media.

Police are aware of the incident and the footage has been sent to officers, however it is unclear if a formal investigation will be launched.

“It is sickening, really,” one mother said.

“To see young girls being so violent like that is just shocking.

“I have spoken to the school about my concerns and the fact this video is doing the rounds.”

Another alleged incident at the Bellarine Secondary College was reported just days later on January 31.

One witness said a boy was hit in the head with a metal object outside the school’s Drysdale campus.

A Department of Education spokesman said it was aware of two incidents involving a small number of Bellarine Secondary College students.

“Appropriate action has been taken, including reporting these incidents to the relevant authorities,” he said.

“Wellbeing support will be provided to the students that require it.”

A spokesman from the eSafety Commissioner condemned the alleged attack and sharing of the video, saying reports relating to school fight videos posted on social media were a regular occurrence.

He said the “all-pervasive role of technology” meant conflict occurring within school grounds often spilt outside their gates.

“From talking to parents of children who have unwillingly appeared in videos like these, we know it can be deeply distressing and humiliating for young victims to know other people have seen them being physically assaulted in this way,” he said.

“And that’s on top of the physical and emotional trauma of the initial attack.

“Sometimes these videos involve willing participants in a kind of Fight Club-style scenario, but they can also involve children who are unwilling victims of unprovoked physical attacks.”

It comes after new figures revealed suspensions have skyrocketed across Victoria’s state government primary and secondary schools, with two in Geelong among the worst over a five-year period.

Documents exclusively obtained from the Department of Education by News Corp last month, under Freedom of Information laws, can reveal the true extent of student suspensions at 250 state schools, with 87,021 students suspended between 2019 to 2023.

Corio’s Northern Bay College was ninth on the list with a total of 891 students suspended over the five years.

North Geelong Secondary College was 11th with 852.

The Bellarine Secondary College had 658.

Australian Primary Principals Association president Angela Falkenberg said school leaders across the country had also expressed concerns about children being violent in classrooms.

“There are children who are throwing punches whether it’s at a peer or someone else,” Ms Falkenberg said.

“There’s instances of using things as a weapon, from throwing a sticky tape dispenser to having a knife … schools are required to act promptly and responsively.”
