A man accused of driving on the wrong side of the Geelong Ring Road allegedly led police on a high speed chase before his eventual arrest.

The alleged incident is one of several across the region which prompted police to issue a stern warning to drivers ahead of the new year.

Geelong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Megan De Winne said a man aged in his 50s allegedly led police on a high speed chase along the Geelong Ring Road on December 18.

Sergeant De Winne said the man was travelling at 100km/h along the wrong side of the highway, near Cox Rd, at 4am.

He later drove into a BP service station where officers used capsicum spray to subdue the man while they arrested him.

The man has been remanded in custody and will appear at Geelong Magistrates Court at a later date.

On December 17, police seized cocaine from the male driver of a black Toyota ute in Torquay.

Sergeant De Winne said police intercepted the car on Rocklea Dve about 8.15pm for a routine licence check.

Police said they seized 8g of cocaine which was allegedly hidden in the man’s pockets and an empty chewing gum container.

The man, in his early 20s, was taken to Torquay police station to be interviewed.

Police said they searched the man’s property and seized a further 15g of cocaine, a large amount of cash and deal bags.

He was charged with drug trafficking and is due to appear at Geelong Magistrates Court at a later date.

Another man, aged in his 30s, lost his licence after he was detected travelling at 136km/h in a Melbourne-bound lane of the Geelong Ring Road about 3.30pm on December 28.

Police said the man lost his licence for six months and was fined $693.

Sergeant De Winne urged drivers to slow down over the New Year’s period.

“We really want to get the message out there for drivers to slow down and adhere to the road rules,” she said.

“If you are tired, have a rest or share the driving around … and wear your seatbelts.”
