Carbon monoxide poisoning scare at Barwon Prison

Three people were taken to hospital from Barwon Prison on Thursday night after a carbon monoxide poisoning scare.

Specialist fire crews were called to Barwon Prison on Thursday night after reports of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

Emergency services were called to the maximum security men’s prison on Bacchus Marsh Rd in Lara just before 10pm.

An FRV spokesman said a triple-0 caller reported three people had suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

It is unknown at this stage if those unwell were prisoners or management.

Paramedics confirmed they were taken to hospital by road in a stable condition.

FRV hazmat specialists and CFA fire crews also attended the scene.

“Firefighters arrived on scene and attended to the three people involved, working in assistance with Ambulance Victoria,” the spokesman said.

“Firefighters in breathing apparatus conducted atmospheric monitoring at various locations within the premises with no positive readings detected.”

The justice department has been contacted for comment.
