A longtime Geelong takeaway institution has shut its doors.
The Breakwater Fish’n’Chips - owned by the Grinos family for 20 years - has shut up shop after four decades in business.
Theo and Athina Grinos closed the store earlier this week three months after they were given a surprise notice to vacate by their landlords.
“It was an existing business, and we bought it and improved things,” Mrs Grinos told the Geelong Advertiser.
“We enjoyed meeting people and getting to know all of the families. We’ve watched kids grow up who now have children of their own.”
Throughout the years the business was a family affair, with the couple’s children all working in the store as teenagers.
Theo Grinos said he wanted to thank the longtime customers and local community for their patronage.
“We just want to thank everyone for accepting us into the community and supporting us for 20 years,” he said.
“It’s been a great little community to work for.”
The couple will take on a new chapter in Leopold, operating the city’s only drive through fish and chip shop - Opsy’s.
“A lot of our customers have said they’ll be following us,” Mrs Grinos said.
“We’re looking forward to becoming part of a new community.”
