RADIO presenter Ray Hadley's marriage broke down because his wife says he couldn't leave his ego at the door.
No longer able to cope, his partner of nearly 20 years, Suzanne, moved out of their Dural home with their girls Emma and Sarah.
Speaking openly for the first time about her split from the 2GB mornings host in 2010, Suzanne said: "I think when Ray did have the morning show and it was successful, his ego did grow.
"I think he started to think: 'Wow I'm pretty cool, I'm pretty good'.
"'What brought him back to reality was when he would come home and he was still the same person in our eyes."
She told ABC's Australian Story that she had left Hadley in a bid to make her husband realise what he had lost.
"Two years ago I was very frustrated with the way things were going in our relationship and everything in our life was pretty much revolving around Ray," she said.
"He got angry probably because of his workload and probably because he wanted everything to be perfect, but he got angry about something and I just couldn't deal with it any more, so I left and moved somewhere else with the children."
She said Hadley did not cope well with their split and the realisation his marriage was in free-fall hit hard.
"I think he thought: 'I had everything, I had my world together, what happened?' I often say to him, 'If you worked even one-tenth at this side, how successful your whole life would be' - and I think now he gets it," she said.
In a bid to reconcile their marriage the pair went for counselling and it helped to rekindle their love.
"We did seek help and it was the best thing for us," Suzanne said. "You just have to learn how to get through the issues, get through to that point the next day or next month or the next year and communicate."
The couple's marriage is now back on track and they are in a good place.
"He will talk and work things out ... a so much better dad, a much better husband and much easier to get along with. It's so good," Suzanne said.
Hadley, who takes part in the documentary which screens tomorrow night on ABC1, also spoke frankly about their marriage problems.
He said he was "miserable in every respect" when Suzanne moved out and admitted he was probably to blame.
"I'm not an easy person to live with, I admit that," he said. "I like things to be in routine, and if things aren't in routine I get a bit out ... I become more difficult." Hadley said he confided in his close friend, sports commentator Ray Warren, who advised him to do everything possible to make more time for his family.
The couple got back together in April last year and the radio host said he is now "much calmer" at home.
