Update 1.06pm: NT Police have revealed what sparked a Darwin CBD street to be closed off after a hazmat warning was issued.

Gardiner St in Darwin CBD was closed off from about 11am on Friday after a hazmat alert was issued on the NT incident map.

Multiple officers and fireys attended the scene with fire trucks blocking off both entrances to the small street.

An ambulance vehicle was also in attendance, as well as the hazardous materials recovery unit.

NT Police just after 1pm said the cause behind the closure was a reported broken or faulty battery.

“Police and NTFRS attended the scene and removed the battery,” an NT Police spokesperson said.

There is no risk to the public.

Initial 12pm: A street in the Darwin CBD has been blocked off by police and fire investigation units, with police issuing a hazmat warning.
