Damaged roads due to flood waters across North Queensland are proving costly for the regions cattle farmers, with one saleyard cancelling a scheduled cattle sale due to safety concerns for truck drivers who would have attended.

The Prime and Store Cattle sale at the Charters Towers Dalrymple Saleyards, which was booked in for February 26, has been cancelled due to concerns that more roads need to be inspected and given the all clear to ensure further damage doesn’t occur.

The Charters Towers Regional Council say they have so far inspected 25 per cent of the road network, with Councillor Kim Farmer saying that safety is the number one priority.

“Without full inspections there’s a significant risk that cattle trucks could cause further deterioration, which may jeopardise the Queensland Reconstruction Authority Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements and also put truck drivers at risk with some road conditions unknown,” Cr Farmer said.

Understanding the inconvenience of the cancellation for the region Cr Farmer said the big picture must be considered.

“It’s disappointing to see how this natural disaster has affected so many aspects of our region, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through the recovery process and continue to provide regular updates” he said.

The region has already faced challenges after the floods, in its third week of water restrictions, with Level 2 water restrictions currently in place due to infrastructure issues at the weir.

Charters Towers was isolated after the floods and residents were previously on Level 4 water restrictions.

Though the council has installed a larger temporary pump, the community is recommended to maintain a daily target usage of 8 megalitres to ensure sustainable water management.
