Flinders Highway crash: Woman killed, another fighting for life

A woman in her 50s had died and another woman is critical after a head-on crash on the Flinders Highway near Charters Towers.

A woman in her 50s had died after a head-on crash on the Flinders Highway near Charters Towers.

About 4.05pm, police and emergency services were called to the Breddan near Macrossan Bridge, to reports or a two-vehicle traffic crash.

Police said a Holden Epica and a Hyundai Kona were travelling in opposite directions before colliding.

A passenger in the Kona, was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the Epica, a woman in her 40s, sustained significant injuries and was taken to Townsville Hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the Kona, a man in his 50s, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Townsville Hospital for treatment.

Anyone with relevant information, CCTV or dashcam vision is urged to contact police.

Two crews from the Queensland Fire Department arrived at the scene at 4.30pm, responding to reports of a two-vehicle smash near Archers Road, in Breddan – east of Charters Towers.

Breddan is a sizeable area bordering the town of Charters Towers and the Burdekin River.

A QFD spokeswoman said initial reports suggested that two people had been trapped in the wreckage of their vehicle.

She said their crews used cutting equipment to remove the roof from one of the vehicles.

QAS confirmed at 5.25pm that a female in her 50s was in a life-threatening condition, referring additional inquiries about the victim to QPS.

A QAS spokeswoman said a female had been freed from the wreckage of her vehicle, suffering serious injuries to her legs and arms, while a man had suffered abdominal injuries.

Two patients were rushed by paramedics to Charters Towers Hospital in a serious condition.

With the highway blocked in both directions between School Street and Archers Road, QPS advised motorists that diversions were in place, and to avoid the area, with significant delays expected.
