FAMILIES of children who were molested by former Bega Cheese CEO known as “The Big Cheese” say they are shocked about the extent of child sex offending as he fronted court.
Self-confessed paedophile Maurice Van Ryn, 59, appeared in Bega District Court today and formerly pleaded guilty almost a dozen child sex offences including the more serious charge of “persistent sexual abuse of a child”, which carries a maximum of 25 years jail.
He sexually abused six boys and two girl over almost a decade.
His youngest victim was eight years old and his last offence occurred as late as last year.
The public gallery was packed full of victims’ families who held hands and wiped away tears as they heard him softly answer “guilty” after every charge that was read out in court.
A spokesman for the families said outside court that today was first time that the parents had become aware of the extent of his offending and were in “shock”.
“We remain fairly numb, it’s just the most awful, awful experience,” he said.
“As reprehensible as we feel this man is, the fact that he has pled guilty has at least saved the children from the horror of having to relive the experience (in court).”
He said the families were hoping he receives a lengthy jail term when he is sentenced later this year.
Van Ryn’s lawyer Colin Heazlewood said outside court that his client felt “significant” remorse about what he’s done to the children and was continuing his “chemical castration” treatment in an attempt to stop his urges.
“His wife and his children are standing by him,” Mr Heazlewood said.
“It’s difficult for them but they are standing by him.”
He said Van Ryn is finding jail hard and hopes he receives a “just” sentence.
The former Bega Cheese boss had no family or supporters in court today.
His bail was revoked late last year because he was found to be a flight risk and a threat to the Bega community.
His sentence hearing will be heard at the Downing Centre District Court on February 26.
