Mark Geyer: What the West means to me

For the former Penrith Panthers player the long road to grand final glory started simply - in a housing commission property in Whalan.

THE west means a lot more than just an NRL Premiership to Mark Geyer.

For the former Penrith Panthers player the long road to grand final glory started simply — in a housing commission property in Whalan.

“The West to me is home. It’s where I was born, where I grew up and where I’m currently bringing up my five kids and two dogs,” Geyer said.

“The West may just be a direction to some, but to those that live “West” it signifies a status. A status that I believe those that don’t live out this way perceive as ‘strugglers’, ‘those with the most of nothing’.”

Having lived and breathed the searing heat and biting cold of Western Sydney his whole life, the 195cm Triple M radio host said ‘westie’ is a tag he wears with pride.

“I’m becoming an ambassador for my district because we are far from ‘those people’ without,” Geyer said.

“Spend a day out here and see for yourself. Never in a million years will you encounter a more loyal, loving, and nurturing group of people.

“I’m a proud ‘westie’ and I want every single person who lives west of the Anzac Bridge to feel the same way.”
