PARENTS know how difficult it can be to get their teenagers away from the screen.

But personal trainer James Wanna plans to do just that with the teenagers of Fairfield.

The 33-year-old dad and trainer started Massive Workouts in 2010 and today has more than 300 registered clients in 29 classes each week.

Two years ago he introduced his team-based fitness to junior members of his community, aged four to 12. And now he plans to fill the gap he sees for teenagers who want to get fit.

“I know how hard it is to motivate teenagers, especially once technology gets a hold of them,” he said. “But if they’re not interested in team sports there’s not a lot else for them to do. They can’t work out in a gym unsupervised, so I wanted to create a workout specifically for them.”

Mr Wanna will offer pop-up sessions for teens aged 12 to 16 in the Fairfield area to get the word out and gauge interest. But he says early feedback has already shown a demand.

Run in a similar way to adult sessions, Team Massive Teens will take young clients through different fitness phases such as strength, endurance and speed training.

Massive Workouts is nominated in the Sport in Education category of The Telegraph and NewsLocal’s Champions of the West awards, a grants competition for the Fair Go For The West campaign that has 14 categories, each offering a $10,000 grant.
