FROM a small building in Doonside, Sally Wynd is changing lives.

For well over a decade, Ms Wynd has run the Eagle Raps Education Program, helping teenagers that cannot attend high school for a range of reasons finish their education.

She knows she is making a difference in young lives when those she has helped to graduate come back to introduce their children to her and tell her about their productive jobs and the homes they own.

“I sure hope we are changing lives, in fact, I know we are when the kids come back to tell me about their successes,” she said. “They are kids who would otherwise be lost in society.”

But the program may have to close after federal funding was withdrawn last year.

Students have dropped from about 150 a year to only 20 so far this year.

Ms Wynd and her son Scott Dent tutor the kids to help them achieve their Year 10 Certificate and HSC by correspondence from the old Fire Brigade building in Doonside.

Eagle Raps have been announced as a finalist in the Community category of The Telegraph and NewsLocal’s Champions of the West awards, a grants competition for the Fair Go For The West campaign that consists of 14 categories, each offering a $10,000 grant.
