‘Explosion’: Neighbour heard screams heard before Sadadeen house fire

A home in the Red Centre capital has been gutted in a fire, with a neighbour hearing a ‘big bang’ and screams before emergency services arrived. Find out more.

A neighbouring resident to a home which was gutted in a fire in an Alice Springs suburb says she heard screaming and a “big bang” before the fire fighters arrived.

Northern Territory Police said they received reports of a house fire on Ptilotus Cres in Sadadeen just before 7pm on Wednesday, September 18.

This masthead understands the residence was a public housing home.

“The five adult occupants of the residence at the time of the fire evacuated safely and no injuries have been reported to police,” an NT Police spokesperson said.

A neighbour said they believed the fire had been started by a “heater explosion”.

NT Police and NTFRS as at Thursday morning said the cause of the fire was “currently unknown” and that investigations were ongoing.

“I heard a big bang and a lady screaming – next thing I heard a fire truck coming,” the neighbour said.

She said there had been a “brand new baby” in the home, but “no one was hurt”.

On Thursday morning, Northern Territory Police, fire investigators, public housing safety, and NT Government workers attended the scene.

A crime scene was declared.
