Racing experts say the $10m world record paid for a yearling filly at auction in Warwick Farm on Monday was money well spent and a very shrewd investment.

The filly’s mother Winx is a racing legend with her 33 consecutive unbeaten run including 25 Group 1 wins – the most major races ever won by a horse anywhere in the world.

When Winx retired in 2019, she had earned more than $26m in prizemoney, which was a world record at the time.

Debbie Kepitis, a part-owner of Winx, already had a one third share in the filly before buying her outright at auction, and fully intends to race the filly with her family under her Woppit Bloodstock banner.

The filly is likely to bring together Winx’s winning team of trainer Chris Waller and jockey Hugh Bowman in a bid to recreate the magic.

But experts say that even if the Winx filly does not make it onto the track her amazing pedigree should see her repay the money spent on her many times over.

James Harron, Australia’s leading owner and syndicator, said the Winx filly is worth every bit of $10m even if she does not win a race.

“This is an auction and horses are worth what people are prepared to pay for them,’’ Harron said.

“Winx was one of the most unique horses we have ever seen in our lifetime and these daughters of champions have proven to be excellent producers over the years.’’

Harron said Mrs Kepitis’ decision to go to $10m to buy the Winx filly outright is a long-term investment in the mare’s family for generations.

Even if the Winx filly fails to fire on the racetrack, she remains a very valuable potential broodmare prospect.

“Debbie Kepitis understands racing and breeding and she knows what she is looking for and what to buy,’’ Harron said.

“This is a strategy to race and then breed from this filly for 15-20 years to come.

“Her Winx filly has huge residual value and Debbie is building a (equine) family and building Winx’s dynasty.

“What this filly brought to the sale ring today was the most incredible atmosphere I have ever seen at a horse auction.

“Even though Winx has retired from racing, she is still changing the game.’’
