NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says her cabinet has been selected on merit

Some of the most experienced MPs in NSW, including Duncan Gay and Adrian Piccoli, have been dumped from the front bench in the reshuffle.

“We’re thrilled we have combined a mix of experience and fresh new blood,” new NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian told reporters in Queanbeyan today.

Veteran MP Brad Hazzard will replace Health Minister Jillian Skinner and the Nationals’ Adrian Piccoli lost the education portfolio to former planning minister Rob Stokes

Earlier, Duncan Gay, who lost Roads in the reshuffle, jumped before he was pushed by announcing he would quit Parliament and consider retiring from politics “sooner rather than later”.

In a statement ahead of the announcement, the 66-year-old spoke of his achievements and indicated he will be leaving the Parliament.

“I am now considering the timing of my retirement from the NSW Legislative Council, sooner rather than later,” he said.

The Cabinet reshuffle saw Melinda Pavey replaces him in the post.

On Friday, Health Minister Jillian Skinner also announced she would be quitting politics after she faced being demoted.

Mr Gay said he had been “honoured” to serve for almost three decades as an MLC.

“As a young grazier from Crookwell, I would have never dreamt of being one of the state’s longest serving ministers for roads,” he said.

“I could not be prouder of what we have achieved in my portfolio over the past six years.”

Mr Gay said there was still “more work to do in this vital portfolio”.

“Whether it is sealing the Cobb and Silver City highways in the state’s Far West, completing upgrades on the Pacific, Princes, Newell, New England and Golden highways, or fixing notorious traffic bottle necks across Sydney,” he said.
