An 18-year-old woman has died after a two-vehicle crash at a Winnellie intersection.

Northern Watch Commander Clinton Stewart said both vehicles only held one occupant when the crash occurred at the Coonawarra Rd and Bombing Rd intersection at 5.43pm Sunday.

St John NT Territory Response Manager Craig Garraway said the woman was trapped inside her severely damaged sedan due to a “mechanical failure”.

Mr Garraway said she was extracted in a critical condition, and paramedics performed CPR before taking her to Royal Darwin Hospital.

Sergeant Stewart at 6am Monday said the woman had died overnight.

He said the 43-year-old LandCruiser driver suffered minor injuries and stopped at the scene.

Sergeant Stewart said the man tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

He said Major Crash detectives were investigating the incident and he urged Territorians to “pay attention when driving”.

Sergeant Stewart urged anyone with information relating to the crash to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference number NTP2400089504.

The woman’s death marked the second road fatality on Sunday after a 17-year-old boy was declared dead at the scene of a single-vehicle crash in Katherine early in the morning.
