From historical trivia to hip hop, almost 40 community events around the Northern Territory have received funding to host International Women’s Day events.
The NT government has delivered more than $108,000 in grants and scholarships to deliver the 39 community-led celebrations on March 8, as part of the official IWD Calendar of Events.
Among the recipients is the Council on the Ageing NT, who will host a trivia event for seniors celebrating famous women’s achievements with a luncheon and information sessions.
“We couldn’t do it without the funding from the NT government,” chief executive Sue Shearer said.
“There’s a lot of people out there we know in the cost of living crisis, who can’t afford a good lunch, so we’re offering a lovely lunch and a quiz day.
“It’s important that you can have a bit of fun, really, that’s what we need.”
Casuarina Lions Club meanwhile will host free workshops aimed at equipping women with financial literacy skills to promote economic independence.
Club president Delma Swan said it was the first time they were able to run such an event, which will feature three speakers helping empower women to learn about their wages, investments, and working into retirement.
Minister for Equality Jinson Charls said it was inspiring to “see women leading from the front, shaping the future of the Northern Territory”.
“This year, we are proud to support 39 community-driven events, with 15 new applicants or events, ensuring that women’s voices, talents, and aspirations are recognised and celebrated.
“These events will celebrate women’s contributions, inspire participation, and encourage meaningful conversations about equality.”
Aligning with the United Nations theme for 2025 “March Forward”, the funded events mark the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action — a landmark global agenda for gender equality.
