A 32-year-old man has been charged after he was allegedly caught stealing a car and carrying ammo.

Assistant Commissioner Hege Burns on Monday said the man allegedly stole the HiLux from a Gray residence about 9.20am Friday.

Ms Burns said the owner of the vehicle had been working outside when the incident occurred and called police immediately.

She alleged the vehicle was spotted being driven dangerously throughout Palmerston and Strike Force Trident and the Dog Operations unit tracked the vehicle to Berry Springs.

Ms Burns said police approached the man while he was allegedly removing identifying features from the vehicle such as the number plates and stickers.

She said the man allegedly fled into surrounding bushland, but Police Dog Wedge and his handler caught him.

Ms Burns alleged police found drug paraphernalia and ammunition on the man’s person, as well as a firearm and further ammunition inside the abandoned vehicle.

“This was obviously of great concern to police,” she said.

Ms Burns said the man had been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle as well as in relation to drug and firearm offences.

She said the man would appear in the Darwin Local Court at a later date.
